What is Yad Ezra?

Yad Ezra opened its doors in 1990 with the purpose of providing kosher food to needy Jewish families in Southeastern Michigan. The founders of Yad Ezra learned that there were impoverished Jews living in the community who relied heavily on government assistance programs including food stamps.

Yad Ezra was founded to alleviate some of our clients' financial burdens by distributing groceries on a monthly basis to families in need. During 1990, Yad Ezra served an average of 250 families every month. Current statistics indicate that we provide an average of 1,300 impoverished families (almost 2,700 individuals) with food and health care items every month. In addition, Yad Ezra distributes appropriate foods that help enhance the clients' celebration of every Jewish holiday.

Yad Ezra will distribute 800,000 pounds of food, toiletries and household goods this year.

Profile of a Client

Feeding Families, Nourishing Hope An elderly woman who recently became an American citizen and has been a client of Yad Ezra since 1993 called for her food delivery. In a choked up voice, she thanked our staff members for the delivery of Chanukah treats and household cleaning goods that we distributed to all of our client families at the end of the last year. She told us how much more enjoyable Chanukah was for her because of the special holiday package that included latkes, sour cream, applesauce, baked goods, a menorah, candles, chocolate coins, and a dreidel.

She was also very appreciative of the laundry and dish detergent and other household goods that she received. These items, which cannot be paid for by food stamps, helped ease her monthly expenses.
